With the free agency compensation picks to be handed out on Friday, and the final week of trades next week, week three of the trade period was always expected to be slow. Due to this, once again no trades were confirmed in a quiet day 12 of the trade period.
North Melbourne was the major player on day 12 of the trade period. In fact, they may have been the only player. Key position player Lachie Hansen looks to have brushed aside speculation of a rift with the board and is set to sign a new deal. Meanwhile small forward’s Matt Campbell and Cruize Garlett are definitely on their way out. A deal for Campbell is still being worked out, while Garlett has suggested he would rather play in the WAFL than remain at Arden Street.
GWS are the latest name to join Sydney in the race for Adelaide forward Kurt Tippett. As reported on From the Sideline yesterday, Gold Coast has pulled out of the hunt, while Sydney are failing to come to an agreement with Adelaide over a trade for the key forward. GWS could either offer the Crows one of their first-round draft picks, which include the likes of picks 1, 2, 3, 12 and 13, or take their chances of selecting him in the pre-season draft.
West Coast are holding firm on their desire to retain defender Mitch Brown. The 23-year-old backman is reportedly desperate to leave the Eagles in an effort to gain first-team football, however West Coast is refusing to bow to his demands. St Kilda has led the chase for his signature throughout October, however their chances of completing a deal are dwindling.
West Coast will, however, lose promising young midfielder Koby Stevens this October. The 21-year-old is keen to return to Victoria, with St Kilda, Essendon and the Bulldogs all chasing the youngster. It is believed St Kilda could land the midfielder by offering young West Australian defender Jamie Cripps as trade bait.
North Melbourne has reiterated their desire to sign Port Adelaide utility Ben Jacobs, however could be waiting on a trade involving Hamish McIntosh to seal the deal. It is believed the Kangaroos are looking at on-trading pick 36, which they will receive from Geelong for McIntosh, in order to acquire Jacobs.
The Roos are also keen on Gold Coast ruckman Tom Hickey. St Kilda has chased the 21-year-old throughout the trade period, with the Saints coming close to securing a deal involving pick 24 for the player. However with talks reportedly stalling between the Suns and St Kilda, North Melbourne could be prepared to swoop.
The Free Agency Period opened on Monday October 1st and closes on Friday October 19th at 5pm.
The Trade Period opened on Monday October 8th and closes on Friday October 26th at 2pm.
